Kitchen Spring Clear Out
Fridge and freezer Organisation and Tips by Chef Lior Berman
Spring vibes are here—time to reorganise your kitchen!

Start by decluttering your fridge and kitchen to refresh your space and your energy.
Plus, being more mindful in the kitchen isn’t just good for the planet—it feels good and saves you money too.
Why? Because it’s the perfect moment to take stock of what you have, clear out expired ingredients leftover from one-off recipes, and make room for fresh, seasonal food. You’ll shop less, eat fresher, and gain a better understanding of your and your family’s real needs based on what you actually use.
Busy fridge? Here are 3 tips to help keep it healthy

Store prepared food properly
Always transfer cooked food into glass or plastic containers, not saucepans. Use containers that match the amount of food—avoid oversized ones to prevent steam buildup, which turns into water and can cause the food to spoil faster.
Important: Only pack food once it has completely cooled.
Organise food by date
Place food that’s been prepared or needs to be used first on the top shelves. Newer items can go on lower shelves, and items that last longer should be stored at the bottom.
Say goodbye to fridge smells with lemon
After using a lemon, keep the peel on a small plate in the corner of your fridge—it helps absorb unpleasant odors.
Store most of your grains, seeds, and similar items in jars. This helps avoid having multiple open bags of the same product and keeps everything fresh and easy to track.
Love your freezer 😉

From my private chef days, I learned that prepping meals ahead—and freezing some—is a total game-changer. Why?
Freezing is like hitting the pause button on food: it locks in nutrients and flavour, keeping everything as fresh as the day you made it. Here are my top tips for making your freezer your best kitchen ally:
Batch It, Freeze It, Love It Later I’m a big fan of cooking large batches of grains, soups, and stews, then freezing them in portions. Just double (or triple) your recipes, store them in containers, and label everything with the date. Think chickpea curry, cosy lentil soup, or hearty grains—your fuure self will thank you.
Containers Are Your Best Friend Airtight containers or good-quality freezer bags are a must—no more freezer-burnt surprises. Stackable glass containers are especially great because you can see exactly what’s inside without playing fridge Tetris.
Herb-Saving Hack Got herbs that are looking a bit tired? Don’t toss them! Chop them up, pop them into ice cube trays, cover with olive oil, and freeze. Boom—instant flavour bombs ready to toss into any dish. Genius, right?
Emergency Treats. Because we all have those “I-need-something-sweet-right-now” moments. I keep frozen bananas and berries on hand for instant smoothies or homemade ice cream. Just blend and enjoy—easy, healthy, and satisfying.
