Classical vs Contemporary Pilates: What's the Difference?

If you're new to Pilates, you may have come across the terms classical and contemporary Pilates. While both are based on the original method developed by Joseph Pilates, they differ in their approach.
Classical Pilates follows the traditional exercises and sequences as they were originally taught. Classes tend to be structured, fast-flowing, and focused on precision, control, and consistency.

Contemporary Pilates builds on these foundations while incorporating modern movement science, rehabilitation principles, and functional training. Exercises are often adapted to suit different bodies, goals, and abilities, making classes more flexible and personalised.

So, which is better? It depends what you are looking for. Classical Pilates offers a strong connection to the original method, while contemporary Pilates provides a modern approach that can be tailored to individual needs.

Avalon Pilates is a contemporary Pilates studio and so it’s Pilates based on Joseph Pilates’ original method but with more exercises and variations allowing for injury rehabilitation and creativity by the instructor. Avalon’s teachers are experts in their field and are there to educate and guide you to move your body to it’s best ability. The reason that people keep coming back is due to the exceptionally high standard of teaching at Avalon.
